AJK Supreme Court Bar Association Urges UN Action Over Modi’s Kashmir Visit

Mirpur: The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Supreme Court Bar Association (AJK SCBA) has issued a strong condemnation of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the disputed territory of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

According to a statement by Kashmir Media Service, Javed Najam-ul-Saqib, President of the AJK SCBA, addressed journalists in Mirpur, describing Modi’s visit as an overt attempt to create the illusion of normalcy in a region recognized by the international community as disputed.

Saqib emphasized that the Kashmir issue remains unresolved, originating from the incomplete partition plan of 1947. He noted that United Nations resolutions affirm the right of the Kashmiri people to self-determination, a right that remains unfulfilled.

The AJK SCBA President criticized India’s unilateral actions, such as the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019, and ongoing development projects in the region, as violations of UN resolutions that hinder peaceful resolution efforts.

Saqib called on the United Nations Secretary-General to take immediate action to prevent future visits by Indian officials to the disputed territory and to stop the initiation of projects that could alter the region’s status.

He warned that these actions not only breach international law but also heighten tensions between nuclear-armed neighbors India and Pakistan, posing a threat to regional and global peace.

The AJK SCBA President urged the international community to recognize India’s infrastructure developments in IIOJK as strategic moves to bolster its military presence and control over the region, disregarding the aspirations of the Kashmiri people.

Saqib concluded by urging the United Nations to recommit to its resolutions on Kashmir and facilitate a plebiscite, allowing the people of Jammu and Kashmir to exercise their right to self-determination, and ensuring no further unilateral actions by India in the disputed area.
