Quetta: The urgent need for young people to actively engage in combating climate change was emphasized at the Local Conference of Youth Balochistan (LCOY), held at the Markhor Auditorium of Bitums. The event highlighted the significant human, economic, and environmental impacts of climate change and stressed the critical role of youth, who make up about 64% of the country’s population, in reducing carbon dioxide emissions and restoring environmental balance.
According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Balochistan, Provincial Secretary Forests and Wildlife Balochistan, Dr. Dostin Khan Jamaldini, addressed the concerns of climate change impacts in the region, noting the observable rise in Earth’s temperature in recent years, which has led to severe floods and droughts. Despite the country’s minimal contribution of only 1% to global carbon dioxide emissions, the effects of climate change are disproportionately high. Dr. Jamaldini drew parallels with Bhutan, the only country to achieve zero carbon dioxide levels, suggesting that Balochistan could aspire to this status with the active involvement of its youth.
Dr. Jamaldini urged the young attendees to integrate environmental protection efforts into whichever field they pursue, emphasizing tree planting and conservation as essential steps towards mitigating global warming. He acknowledged the government’s limited resources and underscored the indispensable role of the youth in driving forward environmental initiatives.
The conference also featured engaging activities such as tableaus by school children, which conveyed the importance of preserving natural forests and trees. A panel discussion was held to inform the youth about various opportunities available to them in environmental conservation, receiving high praise from the participants for its informative content.
