Carpet Training Institute facilitates Small and Medium Enterprises in Punjab

Lahore, July 27, 2015 (PPI-OT): The Carpet Training Institute is providing computerized designing to the Punjab handmade carpets manufacturing companies almost free of cost. This was stated by the newly-appointed chairman of CTI, Mr. Muhammad Saeed Khan, at a ceremony held in honour of former chairman of CTI Mr. Sheikh Khalid Saeed.

He said that Carpet Training Institute (CTI), established by the Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association in collaboration with the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan, is working on Carpet Washing and Dying of Wool Lab on scientific basis and will be offering its training very soon to facilitate the small carpet manufacturers to enhance value addition.

Addressing the ceremony, Mr. Saeed Khan said that the CTI, an initiative of public-private partnership, is a self sustained and self supporting institute which was established by the PCMEA in 2008 and continued to run under the chairmanship of Sheikh Khalid Saeed for seven tenures consecutively.

However, the PCMEA has nominated Saeed Khan now for the chairmanship of Carpet Training Institute for next two years. The new chairman said that government made a policy to set up training centres to enhance the quality of exporting items. The govt approved the CTI in 1990s but establishment delayed due to different hurdles till 2008.

Addressing the ceremony, former chairman Mr. Sheikh Khalid Saeed stated that the CTI purchased software ‘Booria’ from Iran for computerized designing of carpets. The CTI has imparted training of computerized carpet designing to those who were earlier working manually.

“Now one designer is able to accomplish a design of carpet just in a single day while in manual designing at least four artisans are required to complete a single design taking up to one month, as one person makes free-hand designing, second person tries to implement this rough plan on graph paper, the third person makes colour combination while the fourth one convert all this design patron into carpet language.”

He stated that the CTI offers 6 months courses to impart training of designing. This Training Centre has so far given training of Turkish Carpet Knitting to hundreds of artisans. The PCMEA Chairman Usman Ghani said different Trainings Practical Courses established by CTI has trained a number of people and all have succeeded to get the job. The Institute is working on Carpet Washing and Dying of Wool on scientific basis and soon will offer its training. All these trainings will be beneficial for carpet industry and cause value addition in export.

The PCMEA vice chairman Qamar Zia stressed the need for setting up dying, processing, finishing and washing labs without which industry cannot take a boost. “In this regard the PCMEA is working with PBIT, Punjab Small Industries, Punjab Technical Development Board and CM is also taking interest,” he added. We want to raise standard of our products to international level, he said. Qamar Zia said that big companies are utilizing scientific method but SMEs cannot afford this. So these labs would facilitate small units in the country.
