Court of Arbitration Rules Indus Waters Treaty Remains Fully in Force

Islamabad: The Court of Arbitration at The Hague has ruled that the Indus Waters Treaty remains fully in force, rejecting India’s decision to hold the treaty in abeyance.

According to Radio Pakistan, in its unanimous award issued today, the Court stated that India could not unilaterally suspend or terminate the treaty and remains bound by its obligations, including those relating to hydroelectric projects on the Western Rivers.

The Court also ordered interim measures concerning India’s Ratle Hydroelectric Plant, prohibiting the concreting of the dam wall and power intake structure above specified levels until ninety days after the Neutral Expert’s final decision, expected in July 2027.

Additionally, it imposed a reporting measure relating to the Ratle project’s construction schedule until shortly after the Neutral Expert’s final decision.
