Raipur: In a troubling development within India’s Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), a 35-year-old constable, Suresh Sonwani, has committed suicide in Chhattisgarh, a state plagued by violence. This incident is part of a disturbing trend of suicides among paramilitary forces in the region.
According to Kashmir Media Service, Sonwani ended his life by hanging at his residence in Demar, located within the Arjuni police station limits of Dhamtari district. He had been experiencing significant mental distress related to marital issues and had recently returned home on a month’s leave from his deployment in the Pulwama district of Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
This marks the sixth suicide incident involving Indian paramilitary personnel in Chhattisgarh in the last three months, raising concerns about the mental health and well-being of those stationed in conflict zones. Recent reports include a CRPF head constable who shot himself in Sukma district on September 14, shortly after returning from leave, and several others from different battalions who have similarly taken their lives across the state.
These recurrent tragedies underscore the urgent need for enhanced mental health support and preventive measures within the paramilitary forces, particularly those deployed in high-stress environments.
