Deadly Attack on Police Checkpoint in Pakistan Claims 15 Lives

Hangu: An assault on a checkpoint in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has resulted in 15 fatalities, including seven police officers and eight alleged “terrorists”. This incident comes only days after another deadly clash in the volatile border province, where authorities have attributed a surge in attacks to militants operating from neighboring Afghanistan.

According to France24.com, the attack occurred late Wednesday in the Hangu district of northern Pakistan. Local District Police Officer Tariq Habib reported that an additional 22 police personnel were injured in the assault. In response, a clearance operation was initiated in the area. The attack follows closely on the heels of a similar incident in the Tank district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The province, which shares a border with Afghanistan, has been experiencing an increase in violence attributed to the Islamist Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) group. In a related attack on Friday, militants used an explosives-laden vehicle to target a security check post, resulting in the deaths of 15 individuals, including soldiers, police, and government personnel.

Security forces responded by killing 12 militants, according to military reports. Pakistan has consistently blamed the rise in attacks in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the southern border province of Balochistan on militants operating from Afghanistan. However, the Taliban government in Afghanistan denies any Afghan involvement in these incidents.

The ongoing conflict has heightened tensions and led to armed confrontations between the neighboring countries. Pakistan has conducted airstrikes purportedly aimed at militants on Afghan soil, actions that have been met with criticism. The Taliban government, along with the United Nations, reported that these strikes in June resulted in the deaths of numerous civilians in eastern Afghanistan.
