Deepfake Technology Emerges as Tool Against Women, Says Punjab Information Minister

Lahore: Punjab Information Minister Uzma Bukhari has stated that deepfake technology is being used as a weapon against women, highlighting a significant issue with little awareness in Pakistan. In a recent interview, she addressed the damaging effects of deepfake videos, particularly on women, and called for urgent improvements in judicial and investigative processes, as well as the enhancement of cybercrime units.

According to Chief Minister of Punjab, Bukhari emphasized the personal impact of deepfake videos, recounting how she frequently has to clarify that certain videos are falsified. She underscored the necessity of a robust legal framework, defending the introduction of a defamation law by the Punjab government, which initially faced criticism for allegedly suppressing dissent. Bukhari noted that public perception is shifting in favor of the legislation, as its importance becomes more apparent in combating deepfake-related issues.
