Defence Minister Khawaja Asif Confirms Consensus on 26th Constitutional Amendment

Islamabad: Defence Minister Khawaja Asif today confirmed that the government has secured the necessary support for the passage of the 26th Constitutional Amendment, emphasizing the development of a broad consensus among political parties within both the National Assembly and the Senate.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Minister Asif addressed the media, asserting that the amendment’s primary goal is to affirm the supremacy of Parliament, in line with the promises made by the Constitution of Pakistan. He highlighted the unanimous agreement among all political factions that the principle of parliamentary supremacy is fundamental and must remain inviolable.

The Minister also tackled the challenges of legislative processes, particularly addressing the rumors of political blackmail. He clarified that the discussions around constitutional amendments are naturally time-consuming and require thoughtful deliberation to achieve consensus. “Constitutional amendments always require time to reach an agreement,” Asif stated, dismissing any claims of government blackmail by any party.

Asif further noted the importance of respecting the democratic process, where the majority should lead the legislative direction without undue influence from minority factions within the parliament.
