Demolition of Historic Shrine in Mumbai Sparks Community Outrage

Mumbai: The demolition of the historic Phool Shah Baba Dargah in Navi Mumbai has incited significant anger among the Muslim community, who view the act as an infringement on religious and cultural heritage.

According to Kashmir Media Service, trustees of the dargah have accused local authorities of violating court orders. They allege that the demolition is linked to land interests associated with a proposed resort project by the Adani Group. The shrine, recognized as a Waqf-registered property, was dismantled under substantial police presence despite ongoing tribunal proceedings. Trustee Abdul Ghafoor Qazi stated, “This is a clear case of contempt of court,” emphasizing that all legal documents were in place.

The alleged connection to Adani’s resort project has heightened suspicions of vested interests influencing the decision. This has led to protests across Navi Mumbai, with Muslim residents and community leaders condemning the demolition and demanding legal action and restoration of the shrine.

A tribunal hearing concerning the case is scheduled for Monday, with trustees committed to seeking justice. The incident has highlighted concerns about the potential misuse of authority and has escalated tensions related to land use and religious rights in the region.
