Dr Fai urges US initiative on Kashmir

New York, July 27, 2016 (PPI-OT):The US-based renowned Kashmiri scholar and the General Secretary of World Kashmir Awareness, Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai, has stressed the urgent need of finding the solution of the current situation in Kashmir through the active engagement of a multilateral effort on American initiative.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Dr Ghulam Nabi Fai in his letter to the editor of New York Times over his editorial published on July 22 said, “The headline from your July 22 editorial ‘Kashmir in Crisis’ could not sum up the situation in Kashmir better. You noted that the unrest is a major setback for peace in the long-troubled region claimed by both India and Pakistan.”

He said that the current situation in Kashmir could not be left to India and Pakistan to achieve. “It requires the engagement of a multilateral effort on American initiative. We believe that it would be a striking demonstration of the global statesmanship which the United States can summon in the cause of peace, international security and human betterment,” he added.

“Kashmiris wish to emphasize that their land is not real estate that can be parceled out between India and Pakistan, but the home of a nation with a history far more compact and coherent than India’s and far longer than Pakistan’s,” he pointed out.

Dr Fai added that no settlement of Kashmiris’ status would hold unless it was explicitly based on the principles of self-determination and the people’s choice.
