ECC Rejects Gas Tariff Hike for Domestic Consumers

Islamabad: The Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) has turned down a proposed increase in gas tariffs for domestic consumers, aiming to shield households from additional financial strain. However, the committee agreed to raise tariffs for industrial captive power plants to bolster revenue within the gas sector for the 2024-25 fiscal year.

According to a statement by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the ECC convened in Islamabad under the leadership of Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb. During the session, the committee deliberated on the Petroleum Division’s proposal to increase gas tariffs for domestic users but ultimately decided against it.

Although domestic consumers will not face higher tariffs, the ECC approved a tariff increase for industrial captive power plants, raising rates from 3,000 rupees per MMBtu to 3,500 rupees per MMBtu. This decision is part of an effort to ensure the necessary revenue for the gas sector in the upcoming fiscal year.

Additionally, the ECC directed the Petroleum Division to implement a grid transition levy on captive power plants, a move aimed at enhancing efficiency within the energy sector.
