ECP Announces Immediate Holding of Local Government Elections in Islamabad

Islamabad: Election Commission of Pakistan has announced the immediate holding of local government elections in the federal capital, Islamabad.

According to Radio Pakistan, the Election Commission stated that the tenure of Islamabad’s local governments expired on 14th February 2021. Under the Constitution, the Election Commission and the federal government are obligated to conduct elections within one hundred and twenty days. However, these elections were repeatedly postponed due to several reasons.

The Election Commission formally heard the case on the 13th of this month, and issued its decision yesterday, instructing that the election schedule be presented immediately.
