ECP Delays Local Government Elections in Islamabad Capital Territory

Islamabad: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has postponed the local government elections in the Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) until further notice. This decision affects the election schedule originally planned for the conduct of these elections.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the ECP issued a notification today stating that the postponement follows recent legislative amendments. The Parliament made changes to the Islamabad Capital Territory Local Government Act, 2015, through the Islamabad Capital Territory Local Government (Amendment) Act, 2024, which was enacted on the 30th of last month. These amendments have necessitated a review and delay of the election program to ensure compliance with the new legal framework.

The ECP has not provided a new date for when the elections will be held, indicating only that they are postponed until further orders. The delay is seen as a necessary measure to align the electoral processes with the revised legal provisions and to ensure that the elections, when conducted, are fair and in accordance with the updated law.
