Federal Minister Addresses Delays and Accountability in Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project

Islamabad: Federal Minister for Planning, Development & Special Initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal, chaired a high-level meeting to address delays and accountability issues in the Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project. The meeting aimed to finalize recommendations for rehabilitating and operationalizing the project.

According to Press Information Department, Minister Iqbal discussed legal aspects with the Secretary for Law and Justice and the Attorney General of Pakistan to establish a legal framework for accountability following the tunnel collapse. The Minister emphasized internal accountability within WAPDA due to poor project management. Officials briefed him on technical challenges, noting that some issues are under investigation. The Minister expressed concerns about delays affecting investigations and accountability. He directed the engagement of an international consultant and expedited project completion.

Minister Iqbal highlighted the necessity of avoiding poor management in future projects like the Diamer-Bhasha Dam and called for independent validation of NESPAK’s work. He criticized the project’s launch without financial closure in 2007, stressing the need for proper planning. The meeting concluded with directives to expedite investigations and involve international experts for transparency. Iqbal urged that consultants and contractors have opportunities to respond to findings, ensuring accountability for delays and financial losses. The meeting was attended by senior officials, including the Attorney General and various secretaries.
