Government to Privatize Loss-Making State Enterprises Gradually

Islamabad: In a significant policy shift, the government announced plans to privatize all loss-making State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs), including the Pakistan Minerals Development Corporation (PMDC), as part of a broader strategy to enhance efficiency and financial stability.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Energy Minister Musadik Malik addressed concerns raised through a Calling Attention Notice by lawmakers including Asad Qaisar, detailing the government’s approach to the privatization of PMDC. Malik highlighted that PMDC currently employs around 2,000 workers, none of whom are directly involved in mining operations. He also noted that provincial governments hold the prerogative to either continue operating or privatize their respective state enterprises.

This move aims to address inefficiencies within SOEs and reduce the fiscal burden on the state while ensuring that the transition respects the roles and rights of the provinces in managing their assets.
