Indian Home Minister’s Statement on Indus Waters Treaty Sparks Controversy

Islamabad: A recent statement by the Indian Home Minister asserting that the Indus Waters Treaty will never be restored has stirred significant controversy and concern. The official statement from a spokesperson highlights this assertion as a blatant disregard for international agreements.

According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Indus Waters Treaty is an international agreement without any provision for unilateral action. India’s announcement to suspend the treaty is described as a violation of international law, the treaty’s provisions, and the principles governing inter-state relations. The spokesperson emphasized that such actions undermine the credibility of international agreements and raise questions about the reliability of a state that refuses to fulfill its legal obligations.

The statement further criticized the use of water as a political tool, labeling it as irresponsible and contrary to norms of state behavior. It called on India to immediately withdraw its unilateral stance and restore the full implementation of the treaty. Meanwhile, Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to the treaty and expressed its intention to take all necessary measures to protect its rights and entitlements under the agreement.
