Indian Minister’s Remarks Spur Fears of Mosque Demolitions Across the Country

New Delhi: Recent comments by Indian Minister Giriraj Singh suggesting that three lakh mosques in India are “illegal” have incited concerns of potential widespread demolitions of Muslim worship sites nationwide.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Singh’s comments came as he supported protests against what he described as an illegal mosque in the Sanjauli area of Shimla. His statements have sparked fears of a broader governmental intent to dismantle Islamic symbols across India. Singh commended the protesters for their stance against the Waqf Board, which he accused of occupying land unlawfully, and called for similar measures throughout the country.

The situation in Shimla escalated into clashes between protesters and police following efforts to dismantle part of the mosque in question. Protesters have also demanded police verification of Muslims in the area, alleging the presence of illegal immigrants. In response, Himachal Pradesh Ministers Anirudh Singh and Vikramaditya Singh announced the sealing of part of the mosque to maintain communal peace, a measure that has nonetheless failed to quell the growing unease among the Muslim community about future actions against their places of worship.
