Islamabad Officials Review Governance Reforms at High-Level Meeting

Islamabad: Federal Minister for Planning, Development & Special Initiatives, Ahsan Iqbal, led a meeting to evaluate governance reforms for Islamabad. Key officials discussed challenges in the city’s governance and outlined steps to modernize its administrative framework.

According to Press Information Department, the meeting was attended by several federal ministers and officials, including Rana Sanaullah, Musadiq Malik, and Barrister Zafarullah Khan, among others. Discussions focused on governance models from other democratic capitals, highlighting the need for Islamabad to update its master plan to address ongoing issues.

Ahsan Iqbal pointed out the necessity of integrating urban and rural administrative structures and called for a clear division of responsibilities under the ICT governance framework. The meeting also addressed the problem of illegal housing societies, with Barrister Zafarullah Khan noting unauthorized constructions in Barakahu. MNA Tariq Fazal Chaudhry emphasized that existing laws need proper implementation to overcome obstacles.

A subcommittee was formed, including representatives from the Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI), Capital Development Authority (CDA), and elected officials, tasked with providing recommendations within five days. This subcommittee will also review the local government structure and address health and educational issues. The meeting concluded with a consensus on the urgent need to establish a world-class municipal framework for Islamabad, with an agreement to take necessary actions swiftly to achieve this objective.
