Karachi Moves KMC Main Building to Solar Energy in Sustainability Push

Karachi: Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab announced the upcoming transition of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) main building to solar energy, with the mosque on the premises also set to be converted. This move is part of a broader initiative to shift more KMC buildings and streetlights to solar power, aimed at reducing the organization’s financial burden and capitalizing on the sale of excess electricity.

According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, during an inspection of the newly installed solar panels on the KMC main building’s roof, Mayor Wahab reviewed the system’s details, including the installation costs of approximately Rs20 million and the capacity to generate 650 to 700 units of electricity daily. The system’s excess power, especially during holidays, can be sold back to K-Electric, contributing to the city’s energy resources. The transition includes structural reinforcements and wiring updates to accommodate daytime solar energy use throughout the KMC building.

Mayor Wahab emphasized the importance of proper maintenance for the sustainability of the solar installation. He also highlighted ongoing and future projects to convert additional parks and municipal facilities to solar energy, citing global trends in alternative energy adoption in major cities and the specific suitability of Pakistan’s climate for solar power. These efforts are part of a wider government initiative in Sindh to increase the use of renewable energy.
