Kashmir Congress Leader Urges Modi Government to Restore Statehood

Srinagar: The chief of the Occupied Jammu and Kashmir Congress Committee, Tariq Hameed Karra, has urged the Indian government to fulfill its pledge of restoring statehood and constitutional guarantees to the people of the region.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Karra, addressing the media in Srinagar, emphasized that the demand for statehood restoration is a principled stance based on promises made by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government in 2019. He reiterated that the rights and guarantees taken away in 2019 must be reinstated, describing the unmet promises as empty words.

Karra called for immediate action from New Delhi to restore statehood, highlighting the repeated assurances given to the region’s people that have yet to be fulfilled. He described the delay as an affront to the emotions, aspirations, and democratic rights of the residents, criticizing the Modi government’s attitude as dismissive.

He also cited directives from the Indian Supreme Court, underscoring two main issues: the need for immediate elections in the region and the restoration of statehood. Karra urged the government to either fulfill its promises as a moral obligation or at least adhere to the Supreme Court’s directions.
