Kashmiris Called to Observe August 5 as ‘Youm-e-Istehsal’ and Black Day

Srinagar: Throughout Indian illegally occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), posters have appeared urging residents to mark August 5 as Youm-e-Istehsal-e-Kashmir and Black Day, commemorating the revocation of the region’s special status by the Indian government in 2019.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the appeal comes on the anniversary of the controversial decision to annul Articles 370 and 35A, actions that were accompanied by a severe military clampdown and prolonged communication blackouts affecting the Kashmir Valley, Jammu, and Ladakh regions. The enforcement of these measures has been widely criticized both domestically and internationally.

The campaign is spearheaded by the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) and various other Kashmiri Hurriyat organizations, with widespread distribution of posters in major urban centers including Srinagar. These posters prominently display images of detained Kashmiri leaders like Masarrat Aalam Butt, Shabbir Ahmed Shah, and Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, symbolizing the ongoing struggle against what they claim are illegal and unilateral actions by the Indian state.

In addition to recalling the events of August 5, 2019, the posters call for the restoration of the region’s autonomy, the release of political prisoners, cessation of human rights abuses, and adherence to United Nations resolutions proposing a plebiscite for determining the region’s future. They also implore international bodies such as the UN and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to intervene in resolving the long-standing dispute.

Furthermore, the posters urge global human rights organizations to investigate the ground realities in IIOJK, particularly the extent of casualties, detentions, and the overall impact on the mental health of the populace since the Indian government’s 2019 actions.

The campaign has gained traction on social media, amplifying the call for August 5 to be observed as a day of resistance and mourning, reflecting the enduring discontent and resistance among Kashmiris against Indian policies in the region.
