Mamata Banerjee Calls for Modi and Amit Shah’s Resignation Over Women’s Safety Laws

Kolkata: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has demanded the resignations of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah, and other state chief ministers for their failure to enact effective laws to protect women. This call came during an assembly session where the Aparajita Woman and Child Bill (West Bengal Criminal Laws and Amendment) Bill 2024 was introduced.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Chief Minister Banerjee criticized the central government’s inadequacies in safeguarding women’s rights and outlined the provisions of the new bill, which includes expediting investigations, ensuring swift justice, and imposing stricter penalties on offenders. She stressed the necessity of social reforms to address sexual violence, which she described as a severe violation of human rights.

Banerjee also announced the formation of a specialized Aparajita Task Force within the police force to enhance the effectiveness of these measures once the bill is enacted. She lauded the bill as pioneering and suggested that it should serve as a template for other states, aiming to rectify the gaps in current central legislation regarding the timely and efficient delivery of justice for victims and their families.
