Mayor Karachi Announces Solar Conversion for City Markets.

KARACHI: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab has announced plans to transition the markets of Baldia Uzma Karachi to solar energy. The initiative will commence with the Bahadur Shah Zafar Market on MA Jinnah Road, followed by other markets under the management of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC). The conversion aims not only to enhance energy efficiency but also to improve the overall condition of these markets. Additionally, all records related to the issuance of challans, including shop details, will be computerized. This announcement was made during a meeting of the State Department, attended by Municipal Commissioner KMC Afzal Zaidi and other State Department officers.

According to Karachi Metropolitan Corporation, Mayor Wahab reviewed the revenue collection strategy in the meeting and directed the State Department to meet the revenue targets set for 2024 and 2025. The target for the fiscal year 2023-24 is 29 crore rupees, while a target of 31.5 crore rupees has been set for 2025. The focus will be on enhancing revenue from KMC’s stores, which are expected to align with the market value. Key markets such as Bahadur Shah Zafar Market, Machhi Mayani Market, Muhammad Ali Mayani Market, and Empress Market will have their records computerized, with a plan to extend this to all 9,000 shops within KMC markets. The Mayor emphasized the necessity of increasing rent collection, considering the prime locations of these markets.

Additionally, Mayor Wahab highlighted the need for improved public amenities in the city. He pointed out the lack of public toilets, which poses significant challenges for citizens, especially women and the elderly. To address this, the establishment of public toilets and KMC kiosks at various locations along major roads and highways, such as Sharia Faisal, MA Jinnah Road, II Chandrigar Road, and the Pakistan Highway, will be prioritized. These kiosks will offer washrooms, seating, as well as food and beverage services to citizens.
