Modi-Govt rules out changes in AFSPA in Kashmir

New Delhi, July 15, 2014 (PPI-OT): The Narendra Modi government has ruled out changes in the draconian Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) in Kashmir and favoured its continuation in the present form in the occupied territory.

The decision in this regard was taken at a meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Security headed by the Prime Minister recently, says Indian news agency, Press Trust of India.

The CCS discussed changes suggested by the Administrative Reforms Commission, it said. The Army had also given its opinion in the matter and had opposed the repealing or dilution of the law in any form and stated that it was required for it to operate in the territory.

Several groups and political parties in Kashmir have been demanding repeal of the black law, Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA).
