National Conference Denounces Nomination of MLAs by Lieutenant Governor in Jammu and Kashmir

The National Conference (NC) has strongly condemned the lieutenant governor’s nomination of five members to the occupied Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, calling the move “unconstitutional and undemocratic.” The party argues that only an elected government holds the constitutional right to nominate members of the legislative assembly. According to Kashmir Media Service, NC leader Rattan Lal Gupta stated that the lieutenant governor’s actions undermine the constitutional process and warned that this approach could further erode public trust in governance. Gupta accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of attempting to manipulate the political environment in Jammu and Kashmir, calling for respect for the democratic will of the people. The nomination of the five members is part of amendments made to the Jammu Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, which were revised on July 26, 2023. These changes will expand the Assembly’s membership to 95, raising the majority requirement to 48 seats.
