New Delhi: Following the Diwali festivities, the capital city of India, New Delhi, has emerged as the most polluted city globally. This surge in pollution levels was predominantly due to extensive firework displays despite existing bans.
According to Kashmir Media Service, large-scale use of fireworks during the festival exacerbated the city’s air pollution significantly. The Air Quality Index (AQI) in New Delhi soared to 348, positioning it at the top of global pollution rankings.
The high pollution levels resulted in a dense smog enveloping the city, prompting residents to wear masks in an attempt to mitigate the adverse effects on their health. The deteriorating air quality is a recurring issue during the festival season, further compounded by the burning of crop residues in nearby regions of northern India. Although provincial governments have enforced bans on fireworks during Diwali and the winter season, compliance remains low, with many disregarding the restrictions. This defiance has not only heightened pollution but also led to several fire-related incidents across the city.
