Pakistan Advocates for Strengthened UN Peacekeeping Efforts

Islamabad: Pakistan has voiced a strong commitment to enhancing the effectiveness of United Nations Peacekeeping operations in response to new global challenges. This stance was articulated by Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, during the Security Council Open Debate on UN Peacekeeping Operations.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Ambassador Akram pinpointed the increasingly complex challenges facing UN peacekeepers, driven by a variety of factors. He urged the international community, particularly the United Nations and the Security Council, to provide comprehensive support to organizations like the African Union, which are willing to undertake more robust peace enforcement operations.

Ambassador Akram reiterated Pakistan’s dedication to improving UN peacekeeping efficacy, especially in conflict-prone areas such as the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and South Sudan. He highlighted the need for a greater focus on local peace initiatives at the community level to mitigate violence and promote peace building.

Citing the successful interventions by Pakistani peacekeepers in Abyei as evidence, Ambassador Akram showcased how localized peace efforts can yield significant results. He affirmed Pakistan’s long-term commitment to UN peacekeeping and its readiness to address the evolving challenges of maintaining global peace and security.

Furthermore, he announced Pakistan’s proactive role in the upcoming Ministerial Preparatory meeting in Islamabad and its participation during its two-year tenure on the UN Security Council and Peacebuilding Commission, underscoring a continued commitment to global peacekeeping initiatives.
