Pakistan and BGI Group to Collaborate on Agricultural Genomics

Islamabad: Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, met with a delegation from BGI Group to discuss collaboration in agricultural genomics and food security. The meeting focused on leveraging genetic technologies to enhance crop resilience and livestock productivity.

According to a statement by Press Information Department, both parties emphasized the significance of food security as a component of national security and the necessity for joint efforts to address global agricultural challenges. The collaboration aims to train Pakistani researchers at BGI Shenzhen, establish joint laboratories, and initiate pilot projects for practical genomic research applications.

BGI, with support from the Chinese government and embassy, plans to launch demonstration projects in Pakistan. These projects are designed to facilitate technology transfer and adoption at the grassroots level, allowing farmers to experience the benefits of genomic advancements firsthand.

Minister Hussain highlighted the importance of translating research into tangible benefits for Pakistan’s agriculture sector, stressing that productivity enhancement should be prioritized. A follow-up meeting is scheduled to establish a working group that will finalize collaboration details and oversee project implementation.

The Ministry of National Food Security and Research remains committed to implementing modern technologies and collaborating with international partners like BGI, aiming to improve agricultural productivity, ensure food security, and support farmers with innovative solutions.
