Pakistan and EU to Boost Ties Through Enhanced Trade Dialogue

Islamabad: The European Union and Pakistan have pledged to strengthen their partnership through enhanced trade and economic cooperation, following a meeting between EU Special Representative for Human Rights, Ambassador Olaf Skoog, and Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Commerce, Jam Kamal Khan. The dialogue aimed to sustain and advance trade benefits under the Generalized Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) while ensuring compliance with international commitments.

According to a statement by Press Information Department, the discussions centered on Pakistan’s adherence to 27 international conventions related to human rights, labor rights, environmental standards, and good governance. Minister Khan emphasized Pakistan’s commitment to these obligations, highlighting their importance for the nation and government. Ambassador Skoog commended Pakistan’s active engagement with the EU and noted the mutual benefits of the GSP+ framework for both Pakistani exporters and European importers.

The meeting also addressed Pakistan’s economic challenges over the past year, with Minister Khan assuring the delegation of progress in reducing inflation and interest rates. Both parties agreed to enhance collaboration to ensure Pakistan’s continued eligibility for GSP+ status while addressing shared concerns. The Minister reiterated the government’s commitment to international obligations through initiatives led by the Treaty Implementation Cell.

The discussions concluded positively, with both sides expressing optimism about the future of Pakistan-EU relations. Minister Khan warmly welcomed the delegation, underscoring the importance of trade and diplomatic ties with the EU as a major partner for Pakistan.
