Islamabad: In observance of the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes against Journalists, Acting President Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani and Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif emphasized Pakistan’s unwavering support for press freedom and freedom of expression. Both leaders advocated for the essential role of the media in ensuring the stability of democracy and the promotion of transparency within the country.
According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the Acting President declared that a free press is vital for democracy’s stability and highlighted measures implemented to bolster journalists’ security in Pakistan. He referenced the enactment of the Journalists and Media Workers Protection Act 2021 and the introduction of health insurance for media professionals as significant advancements.
Syed Yousuf Raza Gillani also called for a holistic strategy to safeguard journalists, mentioning the dire circumstances faced by journalists in conflict zones like Gaza, where Israeli actions have resulted in numerous journalist casualties. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif underscored the impossibility of true press freedom without ensuring journalists’ safety, recognizing the myriad challenges they face, including violence and suppression.
The Prime Minister also praised Pakistani journalists for their vital contributions to democracy and rule of law, reiterating the government’s commitment to enhancing journalists’ rights and ensuring accountability for crimes against them. Both leaders urged the international community to hold accountable those who perpetrate violence against journalists globally.
