Pakistan Commences Term as Non-Permanent UN Security Council Member

New York: Pakistan has officially commenced its two-year term as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, marking the country’s eighth tenure on the influential international body. Pakistan was elected to the Council by the UN General Assembly in June 2024, succeeding Japan in the Asian seat.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Pakistan has historically played a significant role in promoting the principles of the UN Charter and has been a leading contributor to UN peacekeeping missions worldwide. Pakistan joins Denmark, Greece, Panama, and Somalia as new non-permanent members of the Council for the 2024-2026 period.

In a statement shared on the X platform, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Munir Akram, affirmed Pakistan’s commitment to advocating for the rights outlined in the UN Charter, including the self-determination of peoples under foreign occupation. Ambassador Akram also highlighted Pakistan’s intention to collaborate with other Council members to further global peace and security.

Speaking to the Associated Press of Pakistan, Ambassador Akram stated that Pakistan would adopt an active and constructive approach to tackling global challenges, emphasizing the country’s responsibility to address regional threats such as cross-border terrorism and the suppression of Kashmiris’ rights. He underscored the importance of addressing the growing arms imbalance in South Asia and assured that Pakistan’s presence would be impactful within the Security Council.
