Pakistan Opposes Expansion of Permanent Seats in UN Security Council

Islamabad: Pakistan has once again voiced its opposition to the creation of additional permanent seats in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). During the 4th Informal Meeting of Intergovernmental Negotiations on the Question of Equitable Representation on and Increase in the Membership of the Security Council, Deputy Permanent Representative of Pakistan, Ambassador Usman Iqbal Jadoon, expressed the country’s stance against establishing new centers of privilege within the UN.

According to Radio Pakistan, Ambassador Jadoon emphasized that the goal is to democratize the UNSC and support reforms that align with the interests of a significant majority of member states and various regional groups, rather than catering to a select few self-appointed states. He advocated for the proposal by the United for Consensus (UfC) group, which suggests increasing non-permanent members with equitable geographical representation, elected to ensure accountability, as the most viable option for reform.

Ambassador Jadoon’s remarks highlight Pakistan’s commitment to a more representative and accountable Security Council, reflecting the diverse interests of the international community. The UfC proposal is seen as a way to balance power and enhance the legitimacy of the Council’s decisions, as opposed to expanding permanent membership, which could reinforce existing power dynamics.
