Islamabad, February 13, 2013 (PPI-OT): A delegation comprising Mr. Zameer Akram, Pakistan’s permanent representative to Geneva, Ms. Mariam Aftab, Councilor, Ms. Khawar Mumtaz, Chairperson National Commission on the Status of Women (NCSW), Mr. Shaigan Sharif Malik, Secretary, Ministry of Human Rights presented Pakistan’s 4th report in the 54th Session of UN CEDAW Committee.
This report concluded the initiatives taken by the Government of Pakistan for social, economic, political and legal empowerment of women in response to operative Articles of CEDAW, covering the period from 1st January, 2005 to 30th April, 2009.
It was a historic day which provided an opportunity to the Government of Pakistan to generate a better understanding by the world community of the existing and emerging trends in Pakistan in respect of gender equality. The day will remain memorable as 12th February is celebrated as National Women’s Day in Pakistan. The next periodic report would be due in June 2014.
Earlier this report that was an outcome of elaborated and prolonged consultations at national provincial level where representatives of relevant government institutions, members of the civil society organizations and UN agencies provided their input was submitted to UN Committee in May, 2012. The report was initially discussed by UN CEDAW Committee in its 52nd Session held in July, 2012.
Pakistan acceded to the CEDAW on 9th February, 1996. The Convention is known as International Bill for the Rights of Women. All issues related to women are covered under different Articles of CEDAW. It is obligatory for the state parties to submit periodic report on the convention after every 4 years.
