Islamabad: Pakistan has reiterated its commitment to the rights and well-being of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) as the nation observes the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The day highlights the need for the inclusion and participation of PWDs in all areas of society.
According to Press Information Department, President Asif Ali Zardari emphasized Pakistan’s progress in empowering PWDs through legal and institutional measures. The ICT Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, enacted in 2020, is cited as a significant milestone, offering improved accessibility, vocational training, job opportunities, and an inclusive environment for PWDs. The Act also established the ICT Council on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, a body designed to coordinate policy formulation, implementation, and advocacy for PWDs.
Pakistan has also developed a network of Special Education Centres and Vocational Training Institutes to support PWDs in becoming self-reliant contributors to society. A special quota in government jobs has been implemented to ensure meaningful employment opportunities for PWDs.
Despite these advancements, President Zardari acknowledged the challenges that remain. He highlighted the need for increased access to assistive technology, public spaces, and the importance of creating legal, social, and economic conditions that enable full participation of PWDs in all sectors. He called on society to support an environment of dignity and resource provision for PWDs, aiming for a more inclusive Pakistan where every individual can reach their potential.
