Pakistan Seeks UNSC Seat to Address Key Global Issues

New York, Pakistan’s push for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is primarily aimed at addressing issues related to Kashmir, counter-terrorism, and regional stability, as stated by Ambassador Munir Akram, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Ambassador Akram expressed optimism about Pakistan’s chances in the upcoming UNSC election on June 6, during a virtual address to the US-based Pakistan Students Association Coalition. He highlighted that securing a seat would place significant responsibilities on Pakistan to lead in various global arenas, including promoting peacekeeping efforts and consensus-building on critical issues such as the situation in Afghanistan and the right to self-determination for regions under foreign occupation.

Pakistan, which has previously held a seat on the Security Council seven times, aims to leverage its position to articulate the needs and rights of developing countries, particularly in the Middle East and Africa. Ambassador Akram also noted Pakistan’s proactive role in global economic reforms, such as advocating for vaccine equality during the COVID-19 pandemic and supporting the creation of new financial instruments to aid developing nations.
