Pakistan Stands Against Proposed UN Treaty on Fissile Material Ban

Islamabad: Pakistan has officially voiced its opposition at the United Nations to a proposed treaty that would ban the production of fissile material, which is used as fuel for nuclear weapons. The stance was articulated during a session of the UN General Assembly, where Pakistan’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Usman Iqbal Jadoon, critiqued the treaty as discriminatory.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Ambassador Jadoon highlighted that the countries advocating for the treaty have already amassed significant reserves of enriched uranium and are not in need of producing more. He pointed out that India was the first to introduce nuclear weapons into the region and to nuclearize the Indian Ocean. Jadoon reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to a nuclear weapons-free world, but emphasized that this goal must be pursued in a manner that is universal, verifiable, and non-discriminatory, suggesting that the current treaty proposal does not meet these criteria.
