At UNSC: Pakistan has urged global action to address root causes of conflict and sustainable peace.
Islamabad: Delivering a national statement during the UN Security Council Open Debate on Poverty, Under-development and Conflict: Implications for the Maintenance of International Peace and Security, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, emphasized the critical issues of poverty, exclusion, inequality, and the denial of fundamental rights. He stated that these are not merely development concerns but are among the deep-rooted structural causes of conflict. Ahmad stressed that without addressing these underlying drivers, peace efforts will remain incomplete, fragile, and short-lived.
According to Radio Pakistan, the ambassador’s remarks highlighted the necessity for a comprehensive approach to conflict resolution that includes tackling socio-economic disparities and ensuring the protection of human rights. Ahmad’s statement called for coordinated international efforts to create sustainable peace by addressing these root causes, urging global leaders to prioritize long-term solutions over temporary fixes in conflict-prone areas.
