Tehran: Pakistani army chief Field Marshal Asim Munir is scheduled to visit the Iranian capital, Tehran, on Monday.
According to Nam News Network, the visit was announced by Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei on Sunday, citing state news agency Anadolu Ajansi (AA).
The purpose of Munir’s visit, along with his delegation, is to enhance bilateral cooperation and support Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to bolster peace and security in the region, as stated by Baqaei in remarks reported by the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA). During his trip, Munir is expected to engage in discussions with senior Iranian officials.
Pakistan has played a significant role as a mediator between Iran and the United States amid ongoing tensions. The two countries had signed a memorandum of understanding on June 17, initiating negotiations toward a final agreement. However, these talks have faced obstacles, particularly concerning security guarantees and the freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz-an essential global trade and energy route.
From July 8 to July 24, military tensions escalated with the US and Iran exchanging strikes. The US launched attacks on targets within Iran, prompting retaliatory strikes from Tehran on US military facilities and equipment in several Arab countries, including Jordan, Bahrain, and Kuwait.
