Pakistan’s First Competitive Energy Market Policy Set for Implementation

Islamabad: Pakistan’s first-ever Competitive Energy Market Policy is expected to become operational within the next two months, as announced by Minister for Energy Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari. The minister conveyed this development during a discussion with a World Bank delegation headed by Regional Vice President for the Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, Ousmane Dione.

According to Radio Pakistan, Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari emphasized that the transition to the new energy policy will be executed gradually. A comprehensive strategy is in place to ensure the stability of the system throughout this transition. The minister also briefed the delegation on ongoing reforms in Pakistan’s energy sector, which include net metering, privatization initiatives, regulatory improvements, and various investment opportunities.

Leghari stressed the government’s dedication to enhancing private sector involvement in the power sector. Meanwhile, Ousmane Dione reiterated the World Bank’s ongoing support for Pakistan in establishing a sustainable, reliable, and investment-friendly energy framework.
