PM and IMF Discuss $7 Billion Facility and Economic Reforms at UN General Assembly

New York: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif met with International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session, where they discussed Pakistan’s ongoing $7 billion Extended Fund Facility and the country’s economic reform agenda.

According to Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, during the meeting, Prime Minister Sharif expressed gratitude for the IMF’s collaboration in reaching a successful Staff Level Agreement for a 37-month, seven billion dollars’ Extended Fund Facility. He emphasized the government’s dedication to implementing structural reforms and boosting private sector development.

Sharif also acknowledged the IMF’s help in providing technical assistance and capacity-building programs, which have played a significant role in strengthening Pakistan’s institutions and enhancing economic management.

From her side, IMF Managing Director Georgieva reaffirmed the Fund’s support for Pakistan’s initiatives and stressed the importance of maintaining macroeconomic stability while fostering inclusive and sustainable growth.

Furthermore, the meeting addressed the critical need for mobilizing adaptation financing to tackle climate change. It was agreed that Pakistan’s Finance Minister would discuss this issue further with senior IMF officials during the upcoming Annual Meetings.

The discussions concluded with a mutual commitment to enhance cooperation between the Pakistani government and the IMF to promote economic stability and growth in Pakistan.
