Islamabad: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has launched the annual Monsoon Tree Plantation Campaign with the theme for the first week titled “One Daughter, One Tree”. Addressing the inaugural meeting of the campaign in Islamabad, he emphasized the importance of tree plantation as a national, environmental, and climatic responsibility, urging all citizens to participate actively.
According to Radio Pakistan, the Prime Minister directed relevant authorities to ensure that the campaign is implemented effectively rather than being just symbolic. He highlighted that tree plantation is a priority for protecting the environment for future generations and mitigating climate change impacts. The Federal Government is committed to providing support for the campaign’s success. Prime Minister Sharif called on provincial governments, social and religious leaders, and all societal segments, especially students, to participate in the tree plantation campaign in a coordinated manner.
Shehbaz Sharif instructed the use of modern technology to monitor the growth and development of planted trees. He noted that tree plantation is crucial for enhancing human life, preserving natural resources, and supporting biodiversity. Increasing forest cover is vital to counter climate change’s harmful effects and should be pursued through a comprehensive strategy.
The Prime Minister also emphasized the need for focused forestation efforts in Azad Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan to manage seasonal and flood-related disasters. He noted that Pakistan is one of the countries most affected by climate change and urged the Ministry of Climate Change to prepare for the upcoming global climate conference.
Shehbaz Sharif pointed out that the recent monsoon rains and floods underscore the importance of forests for Pakistan. He called for a strategic plan for seed availability and sowing during the monsoon season, utilizing the favorable climate and fertile land in the Margalla Hills to protect forest cover.
The meeting was informed that 41 million new trees will be planted across Pakistan over the next three months. This year’s campaign will feature various weekly themes to emphasize tree plantation’s importance and its role across different societal segments. Themes include “One Daughter, One Tree”, “Green Umbrella”, “One Tree in the Name of Every Martyr”, and “Islam and Tree Plantation”.
These themes aim to honor the sacrifices of the country’s martyrs and encourage participation from women, youth, and institutions in climate action and tree plantation.
