Protests erupt over civilian’s death at Indian army camp in Rajouri

Jammu, Residents of Rajouri district in Indian-administered Jammu and Kashmir have taken to the streets following the death of a civilian contractor at an Indian army camp. The protests have caused significant disruptions, with demonstrators blocking the Jammu-Rajouri Highway to demand justice and compensation for the deceased’s family.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the deceased, identified as 32-year-old Amrit Singh, was working for Military Engineering Services (MES) and died due to electrocution while working on electricity transmission lines at the Talian Nowshera army camp. Reportedly, the electricity was restored unexpectedly without warning, leading to Singh’s immediate death.

The protestors, including Singh’s family and local residents, are calling for a thorough investigation into the circumstances of his death, citing negligence on the part of those responsible for the electrical work. They are also seeking financial support for Singh’s family, highlighting that he was the primary provider for his wife, two minor children, and elderly parents.

The demonstration reflects broader concerns over safety protocols and accountability in military facilities, as well as the impact of such incidents on local communities. The protesters have vowed to continue their demonstrations until their demands for a proper investigation and adequate compensation are met.
