Punjab Border Sealed to Block Farmers’ Protest Access

Amritsar: In an effort to curb a farmers’ protest, Indian authorities have sealed the Punjab border at the Tatiana and Sangatpura checkpoints, preventing protesters from reaching a planned mahapanchayat in Uchana, Jind.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the closure caused significant disruptions to traffic, compelling locals and travelers to use less maintained alternative routes. The presence of heavy police and paramilitary forces has been met with widespread dissatisfaction among the local community, particularly among farmers who intended to participate peacefully in the mahapanchayat. Farmer leader Jarnail Singh criticized the government’s actions, suggesting that the closure was a preemptive measure by the BJP government to prevent a large-scale gathering of farmers, which has significantly impacted daily activities and traffic in the region.
