Punjab Implements Stricter Measures on Flour Labeling and Pricing, Sets Fixed Rates Across Districts

Lahore: In a recent government crackdown, Punjab has set fixed prices for flour across all its districts to stabilize the market and ensure uniformity in food costs. The decision, detailed in a meeting chaired by Secretary Food Punjab Ehsan Bhutta, was part of a broader discussion on wheat and flour prices. This move comes amid varying prices of flour bags within the region, aiming to ensure affordability and prevent overcharging.

According to Directorate General Public Relation – Govt of Punjab announcement issued on 11 September 2024, Director Food Punjab Shoaib Jadon presented the current prices and stock levels of flour during the meeting. The cost of a 10kg flour bag now stands at Rs. 875 in Rawalpindi, the highest in the region, with prices as low as Rs. 760 in several other districts including Layyah, Kot Addu, Muzaffargarh, Rajanpur, Lodhran, Bhakkar, and Jhang. Other districts have varying prices set between these two extremes, reflecting a structured approach to regional pricing.

Secretary Bhutta emphasized the importance of strict monitoring and checking of flour labeling and quantity. He instructed all Deputy Directors and Price Control Magistrates to personally oversee daily operations to ensure compliance with the new pricing structure. This directive highlights the government’s commitment to maintaining standardization and fairness in the distribution of essential commodities.

The fixed price initiative is expected to assist in stabilizing the market and providing relief to the citizens of Punjab by preventing unfair pricing practices and ensuring that flour, a staple in the local diet, remains accessible and consistently priced across various districts.
