Religious Tensions Escalate in Uttarakhand as Hindu Extremists Target Muslim Residents

Dehradun: In the northern state of Uttarakhand, extremist groups have intensified efforts to expel Muslim residents from what they deem Hindu “holy land,” following a disturbing exodus initiated a year prior that left many displaced and in despair.

According to Kashmir Media Service, Mohammad Salim recalls the harrowing events of May 2023 when his community in Purola was targeted by radical campaigns aimed at eradicating Islam from the area. The violent rhetoric and actions of local Hindu nationalists have driven fear into the hearts of the Muslim minority, consisting of individuals like Salim, who was forced to flee to save his life and that of his family.

The campaign is led by figures such as Rakesh Tomar, a Dehradun-based activist, who continues to advocate for the economic and social isolation of Muslims in the region. The allegations of “love-jihad” and economic dominance by Muslims have fueled the conflict, despite historical coexistence. The situation is exacerbated by political and social campaigns that promote division, potentially leading to lasting damage to the community fabric of Uttarakhand.
