Several injured in clashes during Muharram processions in IOK

Srinagar, September 08, 2019 (PPI-OT): In occupied Kashmir, several people were injured as a large number of people defying curfew and restrictions came out of their houses and took part in Muharram processions in different areas of the territory. Officials and eyewitnesses in their media interviews confirmed that at least 12 mourners were injured as the Indian troops tried to stop the traditional Muharram processions in Srinagar and Badgam districts.

The troops used teargas and pellet guns on the mourners, who insisted on carrying their procession. Six troops were reportedly also injured during the clashes. The authorities resorted to impose further restrictions in the areas. Today, police vans fitted with loudspeakers patrolled at Lal Chowk in Srinagar and adjacent areas and warned people to stay indoors and not venture out of their homes.

Suhail Ahmed, a Rainawari resident, told an international news agency, Reuters that there have been frequent clashes in the area for last three to four days as troops have been trying to block the procession. “We hear deafening sounds of teargas being fired for last few evenings. We mostly stay indoors but the gas comes into our homes making it difficult to sleep,” he said.
