Tensions Flare at Jamia Millia Islamia as ABVP Members Harass Muslim Female Students

New Delhi: A confrontation erupted at Jamia Millia Islamia University on Tuesday evening when members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing of the BJP, allegedly harassed Muslim female students during a Diwali event, leading to campus-wide clashes.

According to Kashmir Media Service, the incident occurred near a gathering organized by Rashtriya Kala Manch, an outfit affiliated with the ABVP. Members of the group reportedly shouted ‘Jai Shri Ram’ provocatively near Muslim female students, sparking intense exchanges and slogans from both sides.

The situation escalated when other students intervened to object to the ABVP’s behavior, leading to physical altercations. The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the Majlis Student Wing, affiliated with the All India Majlis Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), issued statements condemning the ABVP’s actions. The SFI statement highlighted that when university students protested against the harassment, “these goons led by their state leaders unleashed brutal violence over the students.”

Police intervention followed, involving a lathi-charge that reportedly affected many bystanders, while the alleged instigators from the ABVP were said to be left unscathed. The SFI criticized the police response, claiming it disproportionately impacted innocent students while failing to adequately address the aggressors.

The Majlis Student Wing also criticized the ABVP, accusing them of disrupting the peace under the guise of Diwali celebrations and compromising the safety of female students through inappropriate behavior.
