Karachi, October 29, 2013 (PPI-OT): U.S. Consul General in Karachi Michael Dodman welcomed 200 new students to receive English language training through the U.S. government funded English Access Microscholarship Program. The new students and teachers attended the ceremony which featured an overview of the Access program and a presentation by several program alumni who shared their experiences with the audience.

Speaking at the ceremony, Consul General Michael Dodman said, “Education is the key to success. Through the Access program and many other education initiatives, the United States is helping Pakistani youth reach their full potential as citizens and future leaders of Pakistan.” Dodman added, “English is the language of international relations and commerce. I hope that after completion of their program, these students will be better equipped to take up future challenges.”

The English Access Microscholarship program, a two-year after-school English-language proficiency program, trains talented 14-18 year olds from underprivileged communities. Participants also gain the ability to compete for and participate in future exchanges and study in the United States. In Sindh, the Access program serves 1800 students in Karachi and Hyderabad. Through community service projects, Access students develop awareness of social problems in their own communities; they also develop positive civic attitudes, youth leadership skills, andempathy for the less fortunate. The Access program benefits 5,000 students across Pakistan.
