Karachi: The Union of Small and Medium Enterprises (UNISAME) has publicly lauded Farukh Amil, Chairperson of the Intellectual Property Organization of Pakistan (IPO), for his pivotal role in advocating for Pakistan’s interests in the recent World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) treaty. This treaty, which focuses on intellectual property related to genetic resources and traditional knowledge, represents a significant advancement for Pakistan.
According to Union of Small and Medium Enterprises, the treaty has the potential to profoundly impact Pakistan by protecting and capitalizing on its genetic resources and traditional knowledge. UNISAME President Zulfikar Thaver highlighted the necessity for Pakistan to develop corresponding domestic legislation to fully benefit from the treaty’s provisions. He praised Amil’s initiative in engaging with stakeholders to refine and finalize the treaty’s text.
Thaver also called for the urgent formation of an expert committee to ensure Pakistan’s natural resources are protected against international economic competition. He stressed the importance of this committee in safeguarding Pakistan’s intellectual property rights and fostering a more competitive edge in the global market.
“Amil’s dedication to promoting intellectual property awareness and protection is commendable,” Thaver added, recognizing the IPO Chairperson’s efforts in enhancing Pakistan’s standing in intellectual property rights management and advocacy on the international stage.
