Water and Power Development Authority approves financial assistance for families of FC soldiers

Lahore, June 22, 2015 (PPI-OT): The Pakistan Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) approved financial assistance of Rs. 500,000 each to the bereaved families of the two Frontier Constabulary soldiers namely Sepoy Murad Ali and Sepoy Gul Pir who embraced shahadat in a terrorist attack during last month while performing their duty to protect WAPDA installation at Gomal Zam Dam Project.

WAPDA highly appreciates their courage and devotion to the duty as they laid down their lives in safeguarding the national asset and a source of socio-economic development for the local populace. In recognition of their supreme sacrifice, WAPDA decided to provide one-time financial assistance to the bereaved families of Sepoy Murad Ali and Sepoy Gul Pir to mitigate their hardships.

It is pertinent to mention that Gomal Zam Dam Project is located in South Waziristan Agency of the Federally Administered Tribal Area (FATA). The project area is considered to be a difficult one in view of the prevailing law and order situation in the region.

WAPDA completed Gomal Zam Dam and Power House in 2013. The project is of immense importance for economic progress and social uplift of the locals through poverty alleviation. The objectives of the project are to develop irrigated agriculture, mitigate flood and generate low-cost hydel electricity.

The gross storage capacity of the Dam is 1.14 million acre feet sufficient to irrigate more than 190,000 acres of land. Generation capacity of the Power House is 17.4 megawatt, with annual electricity generation of about 91 million units of low-cost electricity.
